What is NamesCon?

One of the biggest domainer conferences in the industry, from their website:

Since its founding in 2013, NamesCon’s flagship event in Las Vegas has grown into the largest and most anticipated domain industry event of the year. With the explosive growth of new TLDs and rapid expansion of internet connectivity worldwide, the domain industry promises to remain one of the most energized and important markets in technology. Drawing over 1,000 registrations for its first all-digital edition during the COVID-19 pandemic, NamesCon grows and evolves with the domain industry—and the wider world in which we all coexist.

NamesCon was acquired by WorldHostingDays in 2016 so that both organizations could benefit from the synergies between the domain, hosting and cloud industries. Our teams now jointly produce more than ten industry events internationally each year, from blockbuster global shows to highly focused regional events and invite-only CXO retreats. These include NamesCon Europe—formerly Domaining Europe, an intimate gathering of domain-related professionals—and DOMAINfest, a globe-trotting series of events that began in 2012.

Tickets are on Eventbrite for $79 USD.

## Let’s Represent Handshake There?
Still considering my ticket - but do think this year’s specifically will be a good one for the Handshake community to represent itself.

Maybe we do some kind of “happy hour social” event on Zoom during the event?

I think NameBase is participating as well.

Any interest to get involved?

So just wrapped up Namescon online conference.

Did my best to “represent” Handshake to the traditional domainer world. Also saw a few others there (Jothan (Foap/), HNS broker, Handshake Jesus, Steve Webb - via park.io ) so was nice to see them.

My challenge is I live in China and missed the Americas track (I’d say the main track) so I hope the others in the Handshake community represented during those sessions - but I did hop on for the Asia track and some social networking.

Recommend others in the Handshake community to take part in the Namescon, I got some insights on negotiation, mindset, positioning. While handshake namers are not exactly domainer, there is a brother/sister relationship and as this industry develops I do see them merging more.

Shoutout to HandshakeJesus! He’s not yet on our Handshake.mercenary forum, but is very helpful and active in Telegram groups and Twitter - he gifted Michael Cyger
https://www.domainsherpa.com/tag/michael-cyger/ his Handshake name https://www.namebase.io/domains/michaelcyger
He BOUGHT int on the marketplace for 1,250 HNS and GAVE IT FORR free to Michael Cyger.

So here’s how this came up in Namescon.

I joined an audience networking table and Michael was one of the people at the table. Jothan was also there (Foap/ in Handshake) and they saw my Handshake baseball cap and it started to bring up the topic of Handshake.

Michael Cyger then mentions someone on Twitter gave him his name as a gift. I recalled that HandshakeJesus was the one who did that - and said “it was Handshake Jesus right” and he said yes and it got all of us to chuckle.

Tweet is here

And transaction is here

Michael also mentioned another person on Twitter (Chelsea) got him DNacademy/

Which is currently in reveal (so need to wait another 5 days)

HandshakeJesus I have gotten to know in the community over the last month and he is diving in hard and fast on HNS. Buying tons of TLD and saying he has’t been as excited about something since the early days of Bitcoin.

So I gave that background in the networking table, and definitely peaked interest.

It was a table of no more than 10 people, but there was a lot of chatter and questions. I’d say more than half the table hadn’t heard of Handshake, and a couple were skeptical.

The skeptical ones (I don’t name names) argued that it is still a “SLD” technically, as you need to use hns.to, or you need to tell someone it is a “Handshake TLD” so someone needs to use software to get to it, or there may be name collisions with traditional ICANN TLDs in the future.

But a few of us defended saying it is still so early stage and while there may be a one or two off case of a naming collision (I believe there is ) most are totally separate from the ICANN TLDs and once Google and other browsers get enough requests to include Handshake, it is “game over” and this thing is taking off to the races.

Back to Handshake Jesus and Michael Cyger. I did have to admit, and I could feel it from Michael - having a random person on Twitter named Handshake Jesus was a bit intimidating (as there are a lot of crypto scams) but Michael did take him up on the free gift, signed up for Namebase (the Handshake registrar of choice right now really making these more accessible to the masses) and is intrigued.

Could kind of feel it in the discussion, and I don’t want to put too many words in Michael Cyger’s mouth - but he did seem more open to Handshake after actually going through the process.

This was a 10 minute or so discussion, and it wrapped up as saying - people thought Bitcoin was crazy when it first came out - but look at it now, 10 years later and institutional investors are buying it. So if you believe in Bitcoin now, then Handshake is the Bitcoin of domains.

I also had some great discussions with Steve Webb from Park.io who is very bullish on Handshake (they are also invested in http://gateway.io and http://impervious.com )

While we were hoping more HNS sessions, Unstoppable Domains did do a talk - and while not exactly Handshake it is in the realm of blockchain domains and internet.

We all believe, Handshake is a truly organic, bottom up community effort and it will grow to be too big to ignore - similar to Bitcoin is for the financial world.

Good luck to all, the 70 USD for the ticket was a good investment and look forward to attending another in the future.
