More Centralization in DNS TLD Space (Why Handshake Is More Important Than Ever)

Post by skyinclude »

Saw this epic writeup in the Handshake HNS Telegram group and think it is worth spreading.

The former CEO of ICANN really wants to scoop up as many DNS TLDs as ever - and increase "rent".

This is why we need Handshake!!

First Donuts acquires Afilias (which manages .io, .org, and a bunch of others: https://afilias.info/) and then Ethos Capital acquires Donuts. Ethos Capital tried to acquire .org and almost did, but were stopped:

But with this they found another way to get .org, it seems. Although they don't own .org, they now own the registry that operates it, as well as many other TLDs

Fadi Chehadé is CEO of Ethos Capital and is former CEO of ICANN

Soon HNS will be the same, with whales selling the registrar of their TLD

Mike Carson, [Jan 23, 2021 at 3:33:16 AM]:
not exactly the same, especially if SLDs are decentralized

I mean, the guy/cia that owns the unstoppable domain could sell it, right?

Mike Carson, [Jan 23, 2021 at 3:38:56 AM]:
yeah but currently (in ICANN) the registries or registrars can take away SLDs. So when Ethos controls a lot TLDs it is more concerning. Whereas if I completely own a decentralized SLD , I care less what happens to the TLD business. It doesn't directly affect me or my domain

Brandon Dees, [Jan 23, 2021 at 3:46:12 AM]:
yeah with stuff like this happening, and after hearing some related commentary from a facebook friend who i know does deep research into global trends etc. i'm starting to lean more strongly towards insisting on true decentralized trustless ownership of all the things, rather than being willing to compromise on having trusted 3rd parties in the loop

if some money changes hands, that's not a problem, but if the online real estate can be taken from someone who thought they owned it, that is
